People Watching – The Magic Diet

30 March, 2010

Do you ever look at people and wonder what their life is like - really? There is a woman I see every morning after I have dropped the kids off at school who is dressed for work - you know typical office gear, blouse, skirt, face full of make up and a big handbag. I see her cross the road and enter the park and we walk towards each other, the journey takes about 3 or 4 minutes before we meet and then pass each other.

In that time she is constantly stuffing her face full of magic food that she hides in her bag.  I say magic because I think its invisible, unless she has found a new way to lose weight by kidding yourself you are eating by going through the motion of putting "food" to your mouth. I've never actually seen what it is she is eating.

However, there is a fundamental flaw, in that she is overweight and wears dinner medals of crumbs down her front.  She is like a machine, in goes the hand to the magic bag of magic food and then straight up to her mouth, then she chews and chews  whilst the hand goes back down to the bag.  And, whats even more peculiar is that she walks like a crab!!  Her body is practically sideways, her head is turned around away from the other users of the path and its like her body is fighting to face the front.

I'm tempted to make her adjust her position on the path by walking on her side and see if she moves her head.  Maybe the path is a metaphor for life and the head turning is a way of not acknowledging what she's doing.  I could walk past her with a sign saying "I KNOW YOUR PAIN"

She's probably a mum who we should all respect because she can do the mum/work thing and is eating individual cornflakes out of her chaotic bag, choosing to do this instead of eating at home as she can put that time to better use reading with her children and fluffing the cushion.  Then when she gets to work she blogs about this mad woman she walks past in the park each morning who walks/runs everywhere, always has bed hair with a maniacal grin on her face...
