Different ways to walk #2

16 June, 2010

ORIENTEERING -  normally thought of as a running activity, orienteering is a fun way of getting off the beaten track and getting the kids, family and friends involved.  Following a set of "controls" or clues, using a map and compass the idea is to get from A to B and usually back to A again in as short a time as possible, hence a fairly demanding work out can be achieved.
RACE WALKING - This is a competitive athletic sport famous for its unique and quirky wiggle which is actually down to great technique!!  Race walkers can actually reach speeds I run at!  The rules are quite strict but in essence the idea is to the naked eye, the walker should appear to always be in contact with the ground.

The British Walking Federation have permenent trails set out for orienteering, they are graded 1 is easy whilst grade 3 is more strenuous.  When you walk a permanent trail you will need to find the answers to questions on your way.  The answers will provide proof that you have completed the walk.

The Race Walking Association contact them to find a club near you on 01277 220687
