NORDIC WALKING - This is the "new" walking sport that is very popular in northern Europe. as in the cold bits. It involves walking with special poles using a specific technique meaning your arms and upper body are given a workout as well as your lower and leg muscle groups. Brilliant for strengthening your back.
INDOOR WALKING - Isn't the point of going for for a walk getting outside in the fresh air?? All well and good if you feels safe, the weather is permitting and you have the time. But indoor walking is equally valuable as a fitness technique and in the States you find groups of walkers striding around shopping malls. This could be the next big thing over here - can you imagine rolling up to your nearest shopping arcade, tramping aroung for half an hour at a fast speed then rewarding yourself by visiting all the shops afterwards!! Just the motivation some people need.
You could also invest or borrow (as in join a gym) a treadmill - mine is called Roger and without him I'd be a blob. If I'm hungry, bored, upset I take it out on him and he never ever complains. Equally, if I'm confident, happy and feeling motivated he's always happy for me to jump on board. He's only chucked me off once or twice and he was there when I started walking and helped me turn that into a slow jog. He's now encouraging me into a gentle run and this week I've done 3 10Ks with him. He's my star.
